“L-ikbar wieħed fis-Saltna tas-Smewwiet huwa dak li jċekken lilu nnifsu bħal dan it-tfajjel żgħir” (Mt 18, 4).
Min hu l-akbar, l-aqwa, ir-rebbieħ fis-soċjetà, fil-Knisja, fil-politika, fis-suq?
Din il-mistoqsija tifridna minn xulxin, turina l-għażliet li rridu nagħmlu, tiddeċiedi l-passi li rridu nieħdu. Din hi l-loġika li tirbaħ fuq kollox, u bla ma nindunaw inħaddmuha, forsi bix-xewqa li niksbu riżultati tajba u effiċjenti għal ta’ madwarna.
Hawnhekk il-Vanġelu ta’ San Mattew jurina d-dixxipli ta’ Ġesù li, wara li laqgħu l-aħbar tas-Saltna tas-Sema, iridu jkunu jafu x’irid ikollhom biex ikunu nies li jirnexxu fost il-poplu ġdid t’Alla: “Min hu l-ikbar wieħed”. Id-dixxipli ta’ Ġesù lanqas kienu jobsru t-tweġiba tiegħu: poġġa tifel żgħir f’nofs il-folla u qalilhom:
“L-ikbar wieħed fis-Saltna tas-Smewwiet huwa dak li jċekken lilu nnifsu bħal dan it-tfajjel żgħir”.
Minflok il-mentalità ta’ kompetizzjoni u dik ta’ ‘m’għandi bżonn lil ħadd’, Ġesù poġġa ʼl min m’għandux biex jiftaħar u x’jiddefendi; lil min jiddependi għal kollox u jafda lilu nnifsu f’idejn ħaddieħor. Ma jfissirx li għandna nkunu moħħ ir-riħ, jew li ma nkunux responsabbli, imma li nagħmlu att ta’ volontà u ta’ libertà. Infatti Ġesù jitlobna nkunu ċkejknin, u li b’deċiżjoni nibdlu r-rotta ta’ ħajjitna.

Chiara Lubich tfissrilna min hu dan it-tfajjel tal-Vanġelu: “[…] tifel żgħir jintelaq b’fiduċja f’idejn missieru u ommu: jemmen li huma jħobbuh. […] In-nisrani veru, bħal tifel żgħir, jemmen li Alla jħobbu, jintefa’ fi ħdan Missierna tas-Smewwiet, jafda għal kollox fiH. […] It-tfal iż-żgħar jiddependu għal kollox mill-ġenituri tagħhom, […]. Aħna wkoll, bħal dak it-‘tfajjel tal-Vanġelu’, niddependu għal kollox mill-Missier: […] Hu jaf x’neħtieġu, qabel ma aħna nitolbuH, u Hu jagħtihulna. L-istess saltna t’Alla mhix xi ħaġa li tirbaħha, imma nilqgħuha bħala rigal minn idejn il-Missier”.
Chiara terġa’ tisħaq fuq l-importanza li t-tifel iż-żgħir jafda bi sħiħ f’missieru u jitgħallem kollox mingħandu. L-istess ħaġa: ‘it-tfajjel tal-Vanġelu’ jintelaq għal kollox fil-ħniena t’Alla u, bla ma jkompli jiftakar fl-imgħoddi, kuljum jibda ħajja ġdida, lest li jilqa’ dak li jgħidlu l-Ispirtu, ikun dejjem krejattiv. It-tifel żgħir ma jitgħallimx jitkellem waħdu, għandu bżonn lil min jgħallmu. Id-dixxiplu ta’ Ġesù […] jitgħallem kollox mill-Kelma t’Alla, sa ma jibda jitkellem u jgħix skont il-Vanġelu”.
It-tfajjel minn jeddu jibda jimita lil missieru. “Hekk ukoll it-‘tfajjel tal-Vanġelu’, […] lil kulħadd iħobb għax il-Missier ‘itella’ x-xemx tiegħu sew fuq il-ħżiena u sew fuq min mhuwiex, u jniżżel ix-xita tiegħu sew fuq il-ħżiena u sew fuq it-tajbin’; jibda jħobb hu l-ewwel għax Hu ħabbna meta konna għadna midinbin; iħobb bla ma jistenna xejn lura, bla interessi ta’ xejn għax l-istess jagħmel il-Missier tagħna tas-smewwiet” .

Fil-Kolumbja (pajjiż fl-Amerka t’Isfel), Vicente u l-familja tiegħu għaddew mill-prova tal-pandemija, meta fil-pajjiż kien hemm ordnijiet stretti ħafna li ħadd ma jista’ joħroġ barra. Kitbilna hekk: “Meta ma stajniex aktar noħorġu, f’daqqa waħda l-ħajja nbidlet. Marti u ż-żewġt itfal kbar tagħna riedu jħejju ruħhom għall-eżamijiet tal-università; iż-żgħir ma setgħax jidra l-lezzjonijiet on-line. Id-dar ħadd ma kellu ħin jieħu ħsieb l-oħrajn. Qalb dan it-taħwid kollu, meta konna wasalna biex nisplodu, fhimt li dik kienet opportunità biex ngħix bis-serjetà l-arti tal-imħabba fil-‘ħajja ġdida tagħna’, dik li nintefa’ ngħix il-Vanġelu.
Bdejt billi għamilt ftit ordni fil-kċina, kont insajjar u norganizza l-ikliet. Jien m’iniex xi kok espert, lanqas ma jien preċiż fit-tindif, imma fhimt li b’dak li kont qed nagħmel jien kien qed jgħin biex innaqqsu n-nervi ta’ bejnietna. Dak li b’att ta’ mħabba bdejt nagħmel jien, għal xhur sħaħ bdew jagħmluh ukoll l-oħrajn. Meta l-membri l-oħra tal-familja spiċċaw mill-impenji tagħhom, bdew jgħinu fit-tindif, u jpoġġu kollox f’postu. Flimkien indunajna li kliem il-Vanġelu hu veru u li l-fantasija tal-imħabba tissuġġerixxi x’għandna nagħmlu biex ngħixu f’ordni u armonija”.

“Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:4).
Who is the greatest: who is the most powerful? Who is the ‘winner’ in society, in the Church, in politics or in the world of finance? This question runs through relationships, it guides choices and determines strategies. It is the dominant logic to which we may inadvertently resort when trying to ensure positive and efficient outcomes for those around us. Here the Gospel of Matthew presents us with Jesus’ disciples. They have accepted the announcement of the kingdom of heaven and want to know the requirements if they are to be protagonists in the new people of God: ‘Who is the greatest?’ In response, Jesus makes one of his unpredictable gestures: he places a child in the centre of the small crowd. And he accompanies this gesture with unequivocal words:
Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus contrasts a competitive and self-sufficient mentality with the weakest and most vulnerable element in society – the person who has no role to boast about or defend and who is totally dependent and spontaneously relies on the help of others. However, this is not an invitation to be passive or to avoid proactive and responsible behaviour; it is a freely taken act of will. Jesus, invites us to ‘become small’, like children and this requires intention and commitment from us if we are to make a decisive change.
Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
This is how Focolare founder, Chiara Lubich, describes a child of the Gospel: ‘…the child trustingly abandons themselves to their father and mother: they believe in their love. … Authentic Christians, like children, believe in God’s love and abandon themselves into the arms of their heavenly Father, placing unfailing trust in him. … Children depend on their parents for everything … We too, “children of the Gospel”, depend on the Father for everything: … he knows what we need, even before we ask him, and he gives it to us. The kingdom of God is not a reality to conquer and win but a gift to receive from the hands of the Father.’ Chiara emphasises how a child entrusts themselves totally to their father and learns everything from him. In the same way: ‘The “evangelical child” puts everything in God’s mercy and, forgetting the past, begins a new life every day which is open to the promptings of the Spirit and is always creative. Children cannot learn to speak on their own, they need someone to teach them. The disciple of Jesus … learns everything from the Word of God to the point of speaking and living according to the Gospel.’ Children tend to imitate their parents. ‘So the child of the Gospel … loves everyone because the Father “makes his sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and makes it rain on the just and on the unjust”. This child is the first to love because the Father loved us when we were still sinners; the child loves gratuitously, without interest because the heavenly Father does so.’ [i]

In Colombia, Vicente and his family experienced the challenges of the pandemic, under a very strict quarantine regime. He writes: ‘When the curfew started, daily life changed abruptly. My wife and two older children had to prepare for some university exams; the youngest could not get used to virtual study. No one in the house had time to take care of anyone else. This chaos was on the verge of exploding when I realised it was an opportunity to embody the art of loving in our “new life” according to the Gospel. I set about tidying the kitchen, preparing food and organising meals. I am not an experienced cook, nor precise in my cleaning, but I realised that this would help to reduce the tensions of everyday life. What started out as an act of love for one day multiplied over several months. Other members of the family began to do the cleaning, tidying and put things away whenever they finished their work. Together we saw that the words of the Gospel are true and that creative love suggests how to put everything else in order.’
