L-għaxar laqgħa dinjija tal-familji tħabbret f’Ġunju tal-2021. Din il-laqgħa kellha ġġib fi tmiemha s-sena ddedikata għall-Eżortazzjoni Appostolika Amoris Laetitia, u kellha tieħu forma differenti minn dik tas-soltu. Fil-messaġġ tiegħu meta nieda l-forma ġdida għal din il-laqgħa dinjija, Papa Franġisku wera x-xewqa li “kulħadd ikun jista’ jieħu sehem, anki dawk li ma jistgħux jiġu Ruma”, u l-komunitajiet djoċesani kienu mħeġġa jippjanaw inizjattivi bbażati fuq it-tema li hu għażel għal din il-laqgħa: “L-imħabba tal-familja: sejħa u triq għall-qdusja”.
Għalkemm il-belt ta’ Ruma kienet iċ-ċentru ta’ din il-ġrajja dinjija, li saret mit-22 sas-26 ta’ Ġunju 2022, iżda kull djoċesi ġiet imħeġġa tippromwovi u tgħix din il-laqgħa fil-lokal. Il-Knisja f’Malta fdat din il-ħidma f’idejn il-Moviment ta’ Kana, li stieden għaqdiet u movimenti oħra biex flimkien jikkollaboraw f’din il-ġrajja. Twieldet l-idea ġdida li jittella’ stand iddedikat għall-familja waqt il-ġranet tad-Trade Fair. Il-Moviment Familji Ġodda f’Malta kien mistieden u wieġeb b’impenn u ħerqa.
Ruth u Brian Spiteri, li tkellmu f’isem il-Moviment Familji Ġodda, qalu: “Għexna esperjenza tassew sabiħa! Ħdimna mill-qrib mal-Moviment ta’ Kana, okkażjoni biex jissaħħu r-relazzjonijiet u tkompli tixxettel il-kollaborazzjoni. Kiber fina l-entużjażmu u stajna nħossu b’mod konkret ir-realta’ ta’ familja anki bejnietna. Kulħadd għen mill-aħjar li seta’, kemm fit-tħejjija kif ukoll waqt il-fiera. Stajna anki nuru video-clip dwar il-familja li sar għal din l-okkażjoni bl-għajnuna professjonali ta’ wieħed minna. Naturalment, id-diffikultajiet ma naqsux imma l-imħabba u l-impenn sinċier għenuna negħlbuhom”.
Komplew jgħidu: “Meta konna fl-istand tat-Trade Fair il-Ġimgħa 24 ta’ Ġunju ltqajna ma’ ħafna li ġew iżuruh. Għamilna l-esperjenza ta’ Moviment li joħroġ biex jiltaqa’ ma’ kulħadd. Kien hemm waqtiet fejn stajna biss insellmu jew nagħtu tbissima, kien hemm oħrajn fejn stajna niefqu nisimgħu u anki nagħtu kelma ta’ kuraġġ. Kellna ċ-ċans li nippreżentaw id-dada tal-imħabba (…). Imma fuq kollox f’qalbna kien hemm ix-xewqa li nkunu xhieda ta’ dik l-Imħabba li anki d-dinja tal-familja tant għandha bżonn.”.
Grazzi għall-mezzi tax-xandir, familji mid-dinja kollha setgħu jsegwu anki dak li kien qed jiġri Ruma fejn kien hemm miġbura rappreżentanti tal-familji mid-dinja kollha, fosthom anki żewġ familji Maltin.
Fil-laqgħa li saret f’Sala Pawlu VI, fil-Vatikan, diversi familji qasmu l-esperjenza tagħhom, u meta l-Papa tahom il-messaġġ tiegħu hu qalilhom: “Kull waħda mill-familji tagħkom għandha missjoni fid-dinja, għandha xhieda x’tagħti” u talabhom biex iħallu lil Kristu jibdilhom ħalli huma wkoll jibdlu d-dinja u jagħmluha “dar għal dawk li għandhom bżonn min jilqagħhom, għal dawk li għandhom bżonn jiltaqgħu ma’ Kristu u jħossuhom maħbubin”.
Is-Sibt 25 ta’ Ġunju fil-għaxija, familji mid-dinja kollha nġabru fi Pjazza San Pietru għall-Quddiesa. Għalkemm kien Kardinal Farrell, il-prefett tad-Dikasteru għal-Lajċi, Familja u Ħajja li ppresida din iċ-ċelebrazzjoni ewkaristika, imma kien Papa Franġisku li għamel l-omelja. Kliem il-Papa nisslu entużjażmu u wrew kif il-familja tista’ twassal l-Aħbar it-Tajba bix-xhieda tagħha tal-imħabba u bil-qawwa u l-perseveranza tagħha fil-waqtiet diffiċli.
Tħabbar li l-XI il-Laqgħa Dinjija tal-Familji għandha ssir fl-2028, fil-waqt li fl-okkażjoni tas-Sena tal-Ġublew 2025 isir “Il-Ġublew tal-Familji”.

The 10th World Meeting of Families, announced in June 2021, had the aim of bringing to conclusion the year dedicated to the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, and it was expected to be conducted in a different way than usual. In convening the meeting, Pope Francis showed the desire that “everyone take part, even those who wouldn’t be able to travel to Rome”, and so Diocesan communities around the world were encouraged to plan initiatives based on the theme he had chosen for the meeting: “Family Love: a Vocation and a Path to Holiness”.
Although the city of Rome was the centre of this major event, which took place from 22 to 26 June 2022, every diocese was encouraged to organise and promote the meeting locally. The Archdiocese of Malta entrusted the event to the Cana Movement, which in turn invited other family associations and lay movements in the Church to jointly collaborate. The idea was born that a stand dedicated to the family would be set up at the Trade Fair since it coincided with the dates of the World Meeting. The Focolare’s New Families Movement was invited to take part and our members responded with commitment and enthusiasm.
Ruth and Brian Spiteri, speaking on behalf of the New Families Movement, commented: “It was truly a wonderful experience! We worked closely with the Cana Movement and this gave us the opportunity to mutually strengthen our bonds. Our enthusiasm grew as we were able experience first-hand that the reality of a family existed between us too. We all pitched in, both in the preparation of the stand and during the Fair itself. We even managed to have on display a video clip about the family produced for the occasion with the professional help of one of us. Of course, the difficulties weren’t lacking, but our combined love and sincere commitment helped us to overcome them.”
Ruth & Brian added: “As we welcomed those who visited our stand at the Trade Fair on Friday, 24 June, we experienced the joy of being part of a Lay Movement which goes out to meet everyone. There were times when we could only greet or give a smile; other times when all we could do was listen and give a word of courage. We also had the chance to speak about the “dice of love”. But above all in our hearts there was the desire to give witness to that love of God which the world of families is so much in need of.”
Thanks to the communications media, families from all over the world could also follow what was happening in Rome where representatives of families from all over the world were gathered, including two Maltese families.
During the meeting held in the Vatican’s Pope Paul VI Hall, several families shared their experience, and in his address the Pope said to them: “Each of your families has a mission to carry out in our world, a testimony to give”, and he invited them to: “Let yourselves be changed by him, so that you too can change the world and make it “home” for all those who need to feel welcomed and accepted, for all those who need to encounter Christ and to know that they are loved.”
On Saturday, 25 June, in the evening, families from all over the world gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Mass. Although it was Cardinal Farrell, the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, who presided over this Eucharistic celebration, it was Pope Francis himself who gave the homily. The Pope’s words inspired enthusiasm and showed how the family can spread the Good News through its witness of love and through giving strength and perseverance in difficult times.
The next upcoming events for families were also announced: The “Jubilee of Families” in 2025 in Rome, and the 11th World Meeting of Families in 2028.
